The St. Louis
Poetry Slam is an audience judged poetry competition where the best poet of the evening wins up to $100! It takes place EVERY Wednesday at Rhythm & Brews Coffeehouse; 541 Grand @ Washington. $5 cover

a poetry slam is a competition where a poet performs a poem of their own creation in three minutes or less. Props and costumes are not allowed. Five random audience judges score the poem by holding up score cards ranging from 0 being the worst poem and 10 being the best.

poetry slam was created in the mid
eighties by a construction worker
named mark smith. (so what) it got
its start at a bar in chicago called
the green mill. today, the poetry
slam has grown quickly to include
an annual national competition. st.
louis has been sending a team to
the national competition since 2000.
last year, st. louis hosted the national
competiton and this year, st. louis
sent nicole` mondaine to the indy
world poetry slam, and u. city high
sent a team to the youth nationals.
this year’s st. louis poetry slam team
will be selected on june 1st at the
grand slam competition. for more
